FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2015) - The LIU Post softball team split an East Coast Conference double header at the Queens College Softball Field on Saturday. Game One ended in a 3-0 Pioneer decision, while the nightcap saw a 3-0 Knights win. The green and gold own a 26-8 overall and 20-2 conference mark through the 2015 campaign.
The commencing contest saw an early LIU Post lead, as a
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) single through the right side in the second scored
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) to give the Pioneers a tally. In the top of the third, the green and gold tacked on two more scores as freshman
Emily DeVito (Preston, Conn.) reached on a Queens error with two outs to help junior
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) and senior
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) cross the plate and secure the 3-0 LIU Post victory.
Sophomore hurler
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) commanded the circle, allowing the Knights (24-14) just two hits through seven frames. She fanned seven and walked just two in her 13th victory of the season.
The Pioneers collected seven hits in Game Two of the twinbill, but could not tally a score. Havens singled up the middle in the top of the first, while a
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) single to left and another Havens single in the third generated some green and gold offense.
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) doubled with two outs in the top of the fourth frame, but the bottom of the fifth saw Queens break the 0-0 stalemate as a Pioneer miscue gave the Knights a one-run advantage. Two RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth clinched the 3-0 Knights victory.
Senior
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) and junior
Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) combined efforts through the six-inning showing. They collectively whiffed five and allowed the Knights just four hits.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and LIU Post softball returns to action Tuesday, Apr. 21, when they are set to face NYIT in Old Westbury, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
