BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2015) - With the bases loaded and the scored tied 1-all in the bottom of the 10th inning, junior second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled through the right side of the drawn-in infield, giving the LIU Post baseball team a dramatic 2-1 walk-off victory over Queens at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.
With the win and some help from other teams, the Pioneers (16-12, 13-8 ECC) clinched a spot in the 2015 East Coast Conference Championship for the first time since 2012.
In what turned out to be one of the best pitchers' duals of the season, sophomore starter
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) allowed a run in the second before throwing seven straight scoreless frames.
DeCarli was matched by Queens' (8-20, 4-13 ECC) Cameron Burt, who allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the third, when red-shirt senior third baseman
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) drove in junior right fielder
John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.), who reached earlier on an error. Burt would match zeros with DeCarli until he exited in the ninth.
After DeCarli allowed the run in the second, the righty simply shut down the Knights' offense. He allowed just two hits over the next seven innings. His day ended after 9.0 innings of work. The sophomore gave up the one earned run on five hits while walking two and striking out nine.
Fellow sophomore
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) was called upon to pitch the 10th, and after issuing a leadoff walk, he struck out Thomas Parish with the go-ahead run stranded on third.
In the bottom of the frame, pinch hitter
Lou Doria (Wantagh, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and red-shirt senior
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) came in to pinch run. Junior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) followed with a single to left. Then, sophomore catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) laid a perfect bunt down the third-base line with the infield back, loading the bases with no outs. Bowers fouled off three straight pitches, before slapping the game-winning knock through the right side of the infield, allowing Maccarone to score.
Jagiello picked up his fifth win of the season. Groeneveld finished 3-for-4 with a double, while Tolan and Asbaty both had two-hit games.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Apr. 24) when they head to Flushing for a doubleheader with the Knights. The first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
