UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 29, 2015) - Despite scoring nine runs and collecting 16 hits, the LIU Post baseball team dropped its regular season finale, 12-9, to Hofstra at University Field in Uniondale Wednesday.

With the East Coast Conference Championships coming up next week and the Pioneers (17-16) currently on their bye week, sophomore Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) took to the mound on what would normally be his bullpen day. The righty tossed three no-hit innings with his only baserunner come via a hit-by-pitch.

From there, Hofstra (16-26) scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth before sophomore outfielder Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) hit his second home run of the season off the scoreboard in right-center field.

The Pride responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth and three in bottom of the seventh.

LIU Post wouldn't go quietly, however.

In the top of the eighth, senior shortstop Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) led off with a double. Red-shirt senior Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) followed with a double of his own, scoring Alessi. Later, with runners on the corners, graduate outfielder Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) plated Maccarone with a sacrifice fly. Red-shirt senior Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Junior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) scored a run with a sacrifice fly that was dropped by the left fielder before sophomore catcher Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) reached with an infield single to load the bases. Freshman Lou Doria (Wantagh, N.Y.) would drive in a run with a fielder's choice to make it an 11-5 ballgame.

Hofstra added a run in the bottom of the frame, but again, the Pioneers fought back.

With two on, Daley tripled to center, scoring Alessi and Maccarone. Iacono drove in Daley with a sacrifice fly and Brunetti followed with his second longball of the season. A walk by Asbaty and a single from Doria put the tying run at the plate, but Hofstra's Chris Weiss closed the door.

Daley, Brunetti and Maccarone all had three-hit games. Daley drove in three runs, while Iacono knocked in a pair.

Head Coach Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers now await seeding in next week's ECC Championships that will be played at the Mitchell Athletic Complex in Uniondale.
