FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2015) - The second-seeded LIU Post softball team bested third-seeded Molloy, 5-2, in the opening contest of the 2015 East Coast Conference Championship on Thursday. With the win, the Pioneers enter the winner's bracket and improve their season mark to 29-13-1.
The Lions (23-26) were on the board first, as a two-run dinger to right field in the third frame staked them to a 2-0 lead.
The advantage would hold steady through the fourth, until the green and gold rallied with a five-run effort. A
Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) sacrifice fly accounted for the first tally, and a
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) single helped
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y) cross the plate and tie the contest at 2-2. Senior catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) broke the stalemate with a two-RBI, bases-clearing triple, earning LIU Post the 5-2 victory.
In the circle, sophomore and ECC Pitcher of the Year
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) allowed six hits, two runs and one walk in a complete-game outing. She struck out one in the process.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to action Friday (May 1), when they face top-seeded Queens in an ECC Championship winner's-bracket battle at the Queens College Softball Field in Flushing. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
