Baseball Falls to STAC, 4-2, on Day 2 of ECC Championships
Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 8, 2015) - Despite LIU Post's starting pitcher
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) not allowing a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning, the fourth-seeded Pioneers fell to third-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas, 4-2, on Day 2 of the 2015 East Coast Conference Baseball Championships.
The Pioneers (18-17) struggled offensively, as St. Thomas Aquinas' (26-17-1) starter Nick May kept the green and gold bats quiet all afternoon.
In the third inning, Jagiello's control got away from him, as he loaded the bases via two walks and a hit-by-pitch. The sophomore eventually walked in a run, but was able to escape the jam with no further damage.
In the sixth, the Pioneers got on the board when sophomore outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) singled home red-shirt senior third baseman
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) to tie it at 1-all.
The Spartans would have an answer as they pushed across two runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead 3-1.
In the eighth, the green and gold loaded the bases with no body out, but a bases-loaded walk to junior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) was the only run they were able to score, making it a 3-2 ballgame.
In the bottom half, a throwing error by reliever
Vinny Ruggiero (Plainview, N.Y.) allowed an unearned run to score, and the Pioneers went down quietly in the top of the ninth.
In all, the Pioneers mananged just three hits off May, who threw a complete game on 129 pitches for the win.
LIU Post will take on Bridgeport for a spot in Saturday's (May 9) ECC Championship game. The first pitch is set for 4:20 p.m.
