No. 15 Men's Soccer Upset By No. 17 Merrimack, 2-1
Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 10, 2015) - In a re-match of the 2014 NCAA Division II East Region final, the No. 15 LIU Post men's soccer team fell to 17th-ranked Merrimack College, 2-1, at the Purple Knight Classic at Knights' Field.
All of the scoring was done in the first 45 minutes, as the Warriors (3-0) struck in just the third minute to jump out to a 1-0 advantage. Then, in the 29th minute, Merrimack added another, widening its cushion to a two-goal lead.
In the 42nd minute, graduate midfielder
Tom Bowen (Aberdovey, Wales, U.K.) converted his second penalty kick of the season to cut the LIU Post (1-1-1) deficit in half. The Pioneers would trail 2-1 at the break.
During the second half, the green and gold had multiple opportunities to tie it, but consecutive corner kicks in the 50th minute were unsuccessful and a shot by sophomore back
Oliver Hollingsaeter (Asleund, Norway) went wide.
In the 77th minute, red-shirt sophomore midfielder
Erik Berthagen (Gothenburg, Sweden) sent a header wide. With time winding down, freshman midfielder
Charlie Ledula's (London, England) shot was also wide of the frame.
Despite allowing the two first-half goals, senior keeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) made three second-half saves to keep LIU Post in it.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Sept. 12), when they take on Assumption College in a non-conference tilt at the Purple Knight Classic in Bridgeport. The opening kick is slated for 4 p.m.
