BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2015) - The LIU Post men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2015 campaign Saturday with a pair of third-place finishes at the Fordham University Fiasco, hosted at Van Cortlandt Park.
For the women, sophomore
Talya Williams (Schenectady, N.Y.) picked up from where she left off last season, as she placed second with a time of 19:20.70. Senior
Elizabeth Stirling (Wantagh, N.Y.) followed in seventh, clocking a 20:01.12. Their marks rank third and eighth all-time in program history for a 5k at Van Cortlandt Park. Williams' time is also eighth-best for a 5k at any course.
Sophomore
Lauren Hoffman (Melville, N.Y.) ran to a 32nd-place showing (22:27.59). Freshman
Kaitie Schillaci (Albany, N.Y.) and graduate
Brooke Rozea (Syosset, N.Y.) finished 50th and 53rd, respectively, after crossing at 23:29.45 and 23:37.19.
The men's side saw sophomore
Ryan Gioe (Huntington Station, N.Y.) lead the way with a seventh-place run of 28:03.74. Red-shirt junior
Mike Scott (Fultonville, N.Y.) clocked a 28:31.89, which was good for 11th place.
Sophomore
Thomas Flynn (Smithtown, N.Y.), red-shirt senior
Steven Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior
Tyler McGarvey (Babylon, N.Y.) all finished within three places of one another. Flynn was 20th (29:29.12), while Arnone and McGarvey individually came in 22nd (29:45.56) and 23rd (29:58.25).
In his first collegiate race, freshman
Joseph Ranni (Deer Park, N.Y.) posted a strong performance, as well. Ranni crossed at a 25th-place time of 30:11.89.
Head Coach
Pat Slevin and the Pioneers are back in action next Saturday (Sept. 19), when they host the LIU Post Invitational in Brookville. The meet is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
