EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2015) - Down 40-28 in the fourth quarter, the LIU Post football team put up 13 unanswered points in the last 6:36 to earn a 41-40 come-from-behind win versus East Stroudsburg University Thursday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Needing a quick score as the Pioneers (1-0) trailed by two possessions late, junior quarterback
Jeff Kidd (Salem, Ore.), making his first start in a green and gold uniform, completed three straight passes, capped by a 54-yard touchdown strike to red-shirt sophomore wide receiver
Kyle Ward (Elizabeth, N.J.).
Following a subsequent three-and-out by the Warriors (0-1), Kidd went back to work on the next LIU Post drive. He fired another three completions, the last of which was a 37-yard game-winning touchdown pass along the sideline to red-shirt junior wideout
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.).
Kidd finished the game 29-of-45 passing for 381 yards for three touchdowns. Hubbard (80 receiving yards) and Ward (101 receiving yards) hauled in six catches and one touchdown apiece. Junior tight end
Sean Binckes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made seven receptions for 76 yards and a TD.
Trailing 6-0 midway through the second quarter, the Pioneers, led by a 47-yard run from red-shirt freshman running back
Malik Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.), scored their first touchdown of the year to grab the lead. Pierre, on a second-and-10, muscled his way from midfield to the Warriors' four-yard line. On the ensuing play, junior running back
David White (Bronx, N.Y.) took the handoff in for six.
East Stroudsburg would go back in front (13-7) on its next possession, but LIU Post responded with a touchdown-scoring drive of its own. Starting at his own eight-yard line after a penalty, Kidd staged a nine-play series that resulted in a 41-yard screen pass to red-shirt junior running back
Mike Williams (Westbury, N.Y.) for the touchdown..
ESU eventually took a 16-14 edge into halftime, after freshman kicker Nicolas Ruiz (Stroudsburg, Pa.) knocked a 32-yard field goal through the uprights just as time expired.
Still behind by one possession (19-14) in the third quarter, the Pioneers used their ground attack to get inside the red zone, led by a 16-yard scamper by Pierre, who had a game-high 117 yards rushing on 11 carries.
One play after Pierre's rush, red-shirt sophomore wideout
James Higgins (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) hooked up with Binckes on an 11-yard touchdown pass to give the green and gold a slight 20-19 edge with 6:44 remaining.
Instead of kicking the extra point, LIU Post attempted the two-point conversion to try and widen its advantage to three. The Pioneers succeeded, as Kidd found Hubbard, making it a 22-19 game.
Defensively, red-shirt sophomore linebacker
Wayne Harris (Jamaica, N.Y.) recorded a team-best eight tackles. Red-shirt junior defensive back
Justin Ortiz (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior defensive back
Clarence Sears (Montclair, N.J.) each collected seven tackles. Red-shirt senior linebacker
Brandon Cheney (Hewlett, N.Y.) totaled six tackles and one sack. Red-shirt junior defensive back
Kareem Folkes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked off a pass, in addition to making four tackles.
