BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 6, 2015) - Behind a two-goal effort from junior
Julia Backman (Morsil, Sweden), the No. 21 LIU Post women's soccer team defeated American International College, 2-1, as part of the Bridgeport Soccer Classic at Knights' Field.
For the second-straight game, the Pioneers (2-0) found themselves down early. AIC (0-2) scored only 3:55 into the contest to take a 1-0 lead.
From there, senior keeper
Katelyn Phillips (Littleton, Colo.) would make five saves to keep the green and gold close.
With time winding down in the first half, Backman got a pass from senior
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) off a free kick and fired a shot into the back of the net to tie it.
In the second half, the Pioneer defense kept the Yellow Jackets at bay, as all four of their shots were off target.
Then, in the 71st minute, freshman
Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) sent a pass to Backman in the middle of the box that the junior from Morsil, Sweden finished with a strong, low shot into the mesh for the eventual game-winner.
The Yellow Jackets held a 10-8 shot advantage and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, but Phillips' five saves and strong defense in the second half led the way for LIU Post's second-straight win.
Head Coach
Mark Dawson and the Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Sept. 9), when they head to North Andover, Mass. to take on Merrimack College in a non-conference tilt. The opening kick is slated for 4 p.m.
