BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2016) - On Saturday, the LIU Post women's basketball team had its late rally attempt fall short in a 62-52 loss to Roberts Wesleyan College in East Coast Conference action at the Pratt Recreation Center.

The Pioneers (2-15, 2-7 ECC) and Redhawks (14-2, 6-2 ECC) played an evenly-matched first quarter. A Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) jumper just before the buzzer tied the score at 16-all heading into the second period.

In the ensuing quarter, the two teams traded baskets for most of the session. With the Pioneers leading 27-23 with just over two minutes before halftime, the Redhawks scored the period's final five points to bring a 28-27 lead into the break.

Freshman guard Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the green and gold with eight first-half points on 3-of-5 shooting, including going 2-for-3 from long distance. Gibbs added six points off the bench.

In the third, junior forward Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) hit a jumper in the paint to give the green and gold a 35-33 lead midway through the stanza, but the Redhawks answered with an 8-0 run to take a 41-35 advantage and would lead 44-40 entering the fourth.

In the final 10 minutes, Roberts Wesleyan led by as many as 10 points (58-48), but the Pioneers fought back to get within six (58-52), when Gibbs drained a three with 1:06 on the clock. However, the Redhawks hit four free throws down the stretch to seal it.

Senior forward Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) paced the Pioneers with 14 points. Gibbs finished with 13 points in 28 minutes off the bench. Messam contributed nine points on 4-of-9 shooting.

Head Coach Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 20), when they head to Washington, D.C. to take on University of the District of Columbia in an ECC battle. The opening tip is slated for 5 p.m.
