Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 20, 2016) - On Wednesday, the LIU Post women's basketball team fell to University of the District of Columbia, 70-47, in East Coast Conference play at the UDC Sports Complex.
The Pioneers (2-16, 2-8 ECC) were led by senior guard
Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.), who scored a game-high 16 points.
The Firebirds (14-3, 9-0 ECC) were in control from the tip, scoring the game's first six points, and took a 19-13 lead into the second quarter. LIU Post shot 6-for-16 in the opening 10 minutes. Junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) led the way with four first-quarter points.
In the second, UDC led by as many as 16 points (37-21) and brought a 37-24 lead into the break. The green and gold continued to struggle from the floor, shooting just 4-for-14 in the second period.
The Pioneers held the Firebirds to just 3-of-10 shooting in the third, but UDC converted 8-of-14 free throws to head into the fourth with a 53-36 advantage.
In the fourth, LIU Post's bid for a comeback fell short, as the Pioneers shot just 1-of-6 from long distance.
Gibbs scored her 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Messam finished with 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Head Coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to the hardwood next Wednesday (Jan. 27), when they travel to Bridgeport, Conn. to take on University of Bridgeport in an ECC battle. The opening tip is slated for 5 p.m.
