BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 3, 2016) - On Sunday, the LIU Post wrestling team suffered losses to fifth-ranked Notre Dame College of Ohio and The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in their 2015-16 home opener at the Pratt Recreation Center.

The Pioneers (5-8) fell victim by a 33-10 count to the Falcons (1-0), and subsequently lost 26-9 to the Braves (6-3) in the nightcap.

Match #1: LIU Post 10, No. 5 Notre Dame (Ohio) 33
In the opener against Notre Dame, LIU Post got strong performances from junior Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore Ed Ramirez, Jr. (Massapequa, N.Y.).

Turano scored 12 near-fall points in the second period, en route to a 13-4 win versus Andrew Bannister (La Plata, Md.) at 141. Ramirez held a commanding 13-4 lead at 165, before being awarded the victory via injury default.

In the last two bouts, sophomores Jake Horton (Medford, N.Y.) and James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) individually suffered close 4-1 and 6-4 losses at the 197- and 285-lb. weight classes.

Match #2: LIU Post 9, UNC Pembroke 26
Trailing 3-0 after the first match, the Pioneers earned back-to-back victories in the next two bouts to grab a 9-3 advantage.

Sophomore Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) put LIU Post ahead at 133 with a pin of Dustin Smith (Morehead City, N.C.) in the final minute (6:21) of the third period. Turano built on the lead in the 141-lb. match, via an 8-6 decision over Jake Smith (Havelock, N.C.).

However, UNC Pembroke stormed back, winning each of the final seven bouts to close it out. Five of the seven matches were decided by four points or less.

Red-shirt sophomore Jackson Mordente (Farmingville, N.Y.) lost 6-3 to Hayden Fry (Vacaville, Calif.) in the 157-lb. discipline. Ramirez finished on the short end of a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Joey DiMartino (Sicklerville, N.J.) at 165.

In the 184-lb. weight class, sophomore Ronnie King (Islip, N.Y.) took Mikey Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) to overtime, but an escape point was the deciding factor in the tiebreaker in a 2-1 loss.

Lastly, Horton and freshman Monair McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.) dropped 4-0 decisions at the respective 197-lb. and heavyweight classes to Brach Walker (Mayodan, N.C.) and Danny Berrier (Linwood, N.C.).

Head Coach Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers return to the mat on Saturday (Jan. 9), when they grapple West Liberty University and East Stroudsburg University in a tri-match at 3 p.m. in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
