PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 31, 2016) - On Saturday, a pair of LIU Post wrestlers took home titles at the USC Wildcat Open, hosted by Johnson and Wales University in Providence.
Sophomore
Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and freshman
T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.) came home with wins in the 133-lb. and 149-lb. weight classes, respectively.
Calderone won his first three bouts by a technical fall (16-0), decision (9-3), and major decision (8-0), before defeating unattached wrestler Ryan Friedman, 9-6, in the final.
Fabian pinned his first opponent in 5:19, and followed that up with a 5-2 decision to advance to the final round. In the title bout, he majored (9-0) Travis Vasquez of Brown.
In addition to the two wins, red-shirt sophomore
Jackson Mordente (Farmingville, N.Y.) and sophomore
Ronnie King (Islip, N.Y.) individually placed second at 157 and 184.
Mordente won his first four bouts by major decision, two via pinfall, before dropping a 6-3 decision to unattached wrestler Colby Knight. Meanwhile, King won three bouts, but lost via pinfall to unattached wrestler Logan Kirby.
Sophomores Jake Horton (Medford, N.Y.) and James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) finished third at 197 and 285, respectively. Both Pioneers won their third-place bouts by major decision.Sophomore

Dan Arkow (Merrick, N.Y.) had respective fourth- and sixth-place finishes at 174. Junior

Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers are back in action next Saturday (Feb. 13), when they return to Providence to take on Johnson and Wales, University of Southern Maine and Hunter College in the Johnson and Wales Quad.
