KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Nov. 30, 2016) - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America released its 2016 Division II All-East Region Women's Soccer Team on Wednesday, and LIU Post had four of its players recognized on the ledger.
Senior back
Kristin Brandman (East Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore forward
Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) were tabbed as NSCAA All-East Region first-team selections, while senior midfielder
Sarah McGarry (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore goalkeeper
Hillevi Eklow (Väröbacka, Sweden) garnered third-team accolades.
Brandman, a three-time NSCAA All-Region choice, started all 21 games for the Pioneers in 2016 and logged a team-high 1,933 minutes played. She spearheaded a defensive unit that allowed the fewest goals in a season (12) since 2010, the last time the green and gold captured an East Coast Conference Championship.
Huntzinger led the Pioneers in scoring this year, en route to securing her first-ever NSCAA All-Region nod. She notched a team-high seven goals and five assists for 19 points. Four of those tallies also proved to be game-winners, two of which came in the last 12 minutes of regulation to decide a pair of 1-0 victories.
McGarry was a staple in the LIU Post midfield in 2016, starting 19 of 21 matches. She was selected to the All-ECC Second Team, after assisting the Pioneer defense in holding opponents to a league-best 0.73 goals-against average. Additionally, she pitched in on the scoresheet, collecting a goal and two assists for four points.
In her first season as the Pioneers' starting netminder, Eklow sported a 15-4-2 record with a conference-leading 0.57 goals-against average and .870 save percentage. Her 11 shutouts ranked first amongst all ECC goalkeepers, as well.
Eklow's play between the pipes landed her a spot on the All-ECC Second Team. Furthermore, she was named the ECC Defensive Player of the Week on three separate occasions.
