KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2016) - The LIU Post wrestling team earned a pair of hard-fought victories Sunday against Nassau Community College and the United States Merchant Marine Academy at the Mariner Duals at Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point.

LIU Post 23, Nassau C.C. 12
Leading by a slight 13-12 count through seven bouts, the Pioneers won the final three matches to take the opener against Nassau Community, 23-12.

Freshman Dan McClure (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) earned an 11-2 major decision over Jeremy Hughes (Wantagh, N.Y.) at 184.

Meanwhile, at 197, junior Jake Horton (Medford, N.Y.) cruised to a 7-2 victory against Deny Travarez (Freeport, N.Y.).

Lastly, at heavyweight, fellow junior James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) made his return to the mat with a 3-1 win against Jonathan Solorzano.(Lindenhurst, N.Y.).

Earlier in the match, freshman Anthony Sparacio (North Babylon, N.Y.) bested Charles Weiss (Lake Mary, Fla.), 7-2, at 125 lbs. Then, at 149, senior T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.) majored Sean Miller (Oakdale, N.Y.), 11-2.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers (4-1) jumped out to a commanding 12-0 advantage, after the Mariners (0-3) forfeited the opening two weight classes.

The green and gold eventually built as much as a 19-0 lead, as junior Matt Langan (Wantagh, N.Y.) won by a 12-0 major decision at 141 and senior Jesse Meaney (Toms River, N.J.) pulled out a 4-3 win at 149.

Though USMMA later rallied to close the gap to 19-13, Horton secured the victory for LIU Post with a 12-1 majoring of Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.) in the 197-lb. bout.

Head Coach Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers are back in action next Sunday (Dec. 18), when they host Kutztown University at noon at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville.
