Women's Basketball Falls to Molloy in Double Overtime, 95-87
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2016) - Despite erasing a 10-point deficit in the final minute of regulation, the LIU Post women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 95-87 double-overtime decision to Molloy College in East Coast Conference play at the Pratt Recreation Center on Wednesday.
Trailing 69-59 in the final minute of the contest, the Pioneers (5-18, 5-10 ECC) used a 12-2 run to even the score at 71-all at the end of regulation. Senior forward
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.), who scored seven of the 12 points, had a chance to win the game at the line, but her second free-throw attempt came up short, and forced overtime.
During the first overtime period, the Lions (7-15, 6-8 ECC) held a three-point advantage, before senior guard
Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) drilled a trey to tie it at 74-all. Gibbs poured in 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor.
Molloy then re-took the lead (76-74) on a lay-up at the 2:23 mark. However, junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) answered with a lay-up for LIU Post to set up a second extra session.
In the second overtime, Gibbs hit a late jumper in the paint to stake the Pioneers to an 86-85 edge. The Lions then fired back with an 8-0 run to put the decision out of reach.
Davis finished with one of her best games of the season, setting season-highs with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Senior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) added nine points and six assists.
Head Coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Feb. 13), when they head to Flushing to take on Queens College in an ECC battle. The opening tip is slated for 1:30 p.m.
