NYIT Outlasts Women's Basketball, 74-67

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2016) - On Tuesday, the LIU Post women's basketball team fell to New York Institute of Technology, 74-67, in East Coast Conference play at the Pratt Recreation Center.

From the tip, the Pioneers (5-20, 5-12 ECC) had an uphill battle, but never gave up. 

With just over two minutes played in the second quarter, the Bears (22-6, 16-1 ECC) took a 13-point lead (25-12) with a jumper. The Pioneers then outscored the visitors, 13-10 to tie the game at 35-all with less than a minute before halftime. Senior forward Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) scored eight points in the burst. The Bears hit a three before the buzzer to take a 38-35 lead into the break.

In the third, the green and gold stayed within striking distance and trailed 55-49 heading into the fourth. 

The Pioneers opened the final quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 57-55 lead. Then, with the Bears up 65-59, Davis hit back-to-back lay-ups, the second coming off a steal by senior guard Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.), making it a two-point game (65-63).

Over the final two minutes of play, NYIT outscored the Pioneers, 12-4, to seal the win.

Davis finished with a team-high 19 points. Freshman guard Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) chipped in 16 points in 32 minutes. Junior forward Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) amassed 11 points and brought down eight rebounds.

Head coach Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to action on Friday (Feb. 19) when they head to Amherst to take on Daemen College in an ECC tilt. The opening tip is slated for 6 p.m.
