BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2016) - In its final two duals of the 2015-16 season, the LIU Post wrestling team cruised to triumphant efforts against the College of Mount Saint Vincent and New York University Thursday at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers, who improved to 11-11 in duals, bested the Dolphins (3-6) in a 56-0 rout, before taming the Violets (14-6), 32-8.
Match #1: LIU Post 56, Mount Saint Vincent 0In the opener, LIU Post was the beneficiary of five forfeits against Mount Saint Vincent, awarding the Pioneers 30 total points off those victories.
In the 133- and 141-lb. bouts, sophomore
Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and junior
Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) individually teched Connor Hay (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Christian Hilario (Haverstraw, N.Y.) by 17-1 and 17-0 counts.
Freshman
T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.) led 3-2 after two periods, before putting together a seven-point third period in an 11-2 majoring of Vincent Lombardo (East Meadow, N.Y.) at 157.
Freshman
Dan Arkow (Merrick, N.Y.) and sophomore
Ronnie King (Islip, N.Y.) pinned Karl Schmitt (Westbury, N.Y.) and David Bell (Fairless Hills, Pa.) in respective times of 4:07 amd 1:15 at the 165- and 174-lb. weight classes.
Match #2: LIU Post 32, NYU 8Following a tough 5-3 sudden-victory loss to start the contest, the Pioneers took eight of the final nine matches, en route to claiming the victory.
Turano put LIU Post ahead for good at 141 with a pin of Austin Day (Winter Springs, Fla.) in 1:06. One bout earlier, Calderone evened the score at 3-3, after rallying from an early 2-0 hole to defeat Nathan Pike (West Covina, Calif.), 5-2.
Sophomores
Matt Langan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
Ed Ramirez, Jr. (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned individual majors at 149 and 165. Langan upended Ian Burke (Sparta, N.J.), 15-6, while Ramirez, Jr. beat Dylan Lojac (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 14-4.
In the 197-lb. match, sophomore
Jake Horton (Medford, N.Y.) recorded a go-ahead takedown with 33 seconds left in regulation, in an eventual 3-2 win versus Mark Papish (Fairfield, Calif.).
Lastly, at heavyweight, fellow sophomore
James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) ended the night on a high note, pinning Kyle Paterson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) in 2:47.
Head Coach
Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers now head to Erie, Pa. for the NCAA Division II Super Region I Tournament, which is set to begin next Friday (Feb. 26) at the Mercyhurst University Athletic Center.
