LANTANA, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2016) - Behind the left arm of red-shirt senior pitcher
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.), the LIU Post baseball team won its third-straight game, beating Post University, 8-1, at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana.
Arena threw a complete game to earn his second win of the season. The lefty struck out a season-best 11 batters and scattered eight hits.
After the pitchers kept the offenses scoreless through three innings, the Pioneers (4-6) broke out in the fourth.
With a runner on, sophomore right fielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) tripled home the game's first run. Junior centerfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) followed with a run-scoring single and freshman third baseman
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) singled home Daley for a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, junior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) led off the inning with his third home run of the season, his second in as many games. Later in the inning, senior second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in a pair with a single, making it 6-0.
The following inning, senior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) singled home a run. A throwing error allowed Asbaty to come around to score, making it an 8-0 game after six.
The Eagles (5-5) scored a run in the seventh, but Arena shut them down over the final two innings to earn the win.
Asbaty and Bowers both had two-hit games to lead the offense.
The Pioneers will now take on Nyack College in the second game of a two-team doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.
