CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 9, 2016) - The LIU Post softball team came away with a split Wednesday, falling to Le Moyne College in extras, 2-1, and defeating Felician College, 10-2, at Hancock Park.
Game #1: LIU Post 1, Le Moyne 2 - F/8Trailing by a run in their final turn at-bat, the Pioneers tied the score on the first pitch of the frame. Senior designated player
Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) took Alexis Eastman's (Endicott, N.Y.) offering deep to left-center, making it a 1-1 game.
Le Moyne (3-2) subsequently threatened in the bottom of the seventh, placing runners on second and third with none out. However, junior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) came through for the green and gold, fanning the next batter, and later inducing a fly out and a groundout to end the potential game-winning threat.
In extra innings, LIU Post was kept off the board in the top of the eighth, setting the stage for the Dolphins. This time, Le Moyne cashed in on its opportunity.
Following a wild pitch that advanced Eastman to third, junior catcher Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y.) slapped an RBI single to shallow right field to end it.
Martin went the full seven innings for the Pioneers in the loss. She allowed five hits, two runs (one earned) and six walks, in addition to striking out six.
Game #2: LIU Post 10, Felician 2 - F/6The Pioneers (4-2) quickly rebounded from their extra-inning defeat, putting a two-spot up in the first against Felician (6-10). Corrao again got the scoring started for LIU Post, ripping an RBI single through the middle of the field. Two batters later, senior first baseman
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) tacked on another, plating freshman catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) with a single to center.
Then, in the second, the Pioneers broke the game open. Junior outfielder
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) drilled a one-out grand slam beyond the left-center field fence, widening the gap to 6-0.
That proved to be all LIU Post needed, as Felician only managed to get two unearned runs off freshman pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) in the top of the third. Olshevski allowed just two hits and fanned one in her six innings of work.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to the diamond Thursday (Mar. 10), when they square off with American International College and Assumption College at the National Training Center in Clermont at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
