Box Score 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Apr. 16, 2016) - On Saturday, the LIU Post baseball team dropped both ends of an East Coast Conference doubleheader to University of Bridgeport, 6-4 and 8-1, in West Haven.
The Pioneers (12-19, 4-11 ECC) found themselves down early, as the Purple Knights (17-11-1, 10-5 ECC) scored two two-out runs in the bottom of the first off starter
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.).
LIU Post would get on the board in the third when sophomore center fielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) singled home senior second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.).
The Purple Knights tacked on a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh.
That inning, Bowers plated junior left fielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) with a single, making it 6-2.
Sophomore pitcher
Dave Anholzer (West Islip, N.Y.) kept Bridgeport off the board in the seventh and eighth, giving the Pioneers a chance in the ninth.
With runners on the corners and one out, Bowers drove in freshman right fielder
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 6-3. After freshman third baseman
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) reached with an infield single, Andreoli singled home a run, making it 6-4, but the rally would fall short.
Jagiello allowed six runs (five earned) over 5.2 innings. Andreoli and Bowers both had two-hit, two-RBI games.
It was more of the same in the night cap, as the Purple Knights scored two in the first off starter
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.).
Again, the Pioneers got on the board in the third when Andreoli drove in a run to make it 2-1.
Bridgeport would go on to score four in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth, to take an 8-1 lead.
Ridge Ackerman set the Pioneers down in order in the sixth and seventh to seal it.
Arena allowed six runs (two earned) over four innings of work. Red-shirt senior
Mike Curti (Oceanside, N.Y.) was touched up for two earned runs on three hits in an inning of relief. Graduate pitcher
J.P. Lipovac (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) tossed a perfect inning out of the bullpen.
