BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2016) - Senior attackman/midfielder
Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal 3:29 into overtime, sending the No. 12/10 LIU Post men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-9 victory against East Coast Conference rival and No. 10/14 Dowling College Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Slane's clinching tally came on the Pioneers' (8-3, 5-1 ECC) third man-up opportunity of the afternoon, of which they were previously 0-for-2. After Dowling's (8-3, 4-2 ECC) Tom Cummings (Wading River, N.Y.) was assessed with a one-minute tripping penalty, Slane ripped a shot past red-shirt junior goalie Frank Sommers (Shirley, N.Y.) to win it for LIU Post in the first sudden-death period.
The green and gold trailed 9-7 late in the fourth quarter, until they came back with a pair of goals in the final 3:43 of regulation to force overtime. Sophomore midfielder
Eric Donahoe (Mahopac, N.Y.) picked no better time to score his first goal of the season, finding the back of the cage in transition to close the gap to a one-goal contest.
Then, in the final minute, LIU Post forced a key Dowling turnover in its own defensive end, and subsequently called timeout to draw up a potential game-tying play. Slane, who had the hot stick all day, was called upon and delivered, stuffing in a shot from just in front of the crease to tie the score at 9-all at the 35-second mark.
Slane led all players in the contest with four goals and five points. Senior attackmen
Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) and
Matt Bellando (Miami, Fla.) netted two goals apiece. Senior midfielder
Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.) allocated a pair of assists.
Junior midfielder
Anthony Galeotafiore (Wantagh, N.Y.) won 14-of-20 (70.0 percent) faceoffs, including the draw to start overtime. He also scooped up 10 ground balls in the process.
Between the pipes, junior goaltender
Matthew Liantonio (Miller Place, N.Y.) made nine saves, while earning one ground ball and one caused turnover. His forced turnover ultimately led to Slane's game-tying fourth-quarter goal.
Overall, the Pioneers, who were a near-perfect 12-of-13 on clears, outshot the Golden Lions, 39-34, and edged their opposition in ground balls, 22-21.
Head Coach
John Jez and his LIU Post squad are back in action next Saturday (Apr. 23), when they host Mercy College for a noon opening faceoff at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville.
