BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2016) - On Sunday, the LIU Post baseball team came away with a 13-12 walk-off win against University of Bridgeport in East Coast Conference action at the LIU Post Baseball Field.

The Pioneers (13-19, 5-11 ECC) and Purple Knights (17-12-1, 10-6 ECC) traded leads throughout the contest, with the green and gold striking first.

In the bottom of the first, junior center fielder Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, until another run came in via a wild pitch.

Bridgeport then scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, before the Pioneers responded.

In the bottom half of the sixth, sophomore shortstop Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) got the scoring started with an RBI single. Later in the inning, freshman third baseman Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) plated a run with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore right fielder Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) drove in a pair with a double, making it 6-4 in favor of LIU Post.

The next inning, the bats came alive again. The Pioneers scored six runs on four hits and three errors to take a 12-4 lead.

The Purple Knights answered with an eight-run top of the eighth to tie it.

With one out in the ninth, Andreoli and junior catcher Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) drew walks, setting the table for senior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.). Ahead in the count 2-1, Groeneveld smacked a line drive to left that scored Andreoli for the game-winning run.

Andreoli finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Spitaleri had one of his best games as a Pioneer, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Groeneveld went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Daley also had a two-hit game to pace the offense.

Freshman pitcher Brian Kavanagh (East Meadow, N.Y.) went seven innings and allowed four earned runs on 10 hits. Red-shirt sophomore Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) got the win in relief, as he tossed 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Head Coach Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Apr. 20), when they take on Bloomfield College in a non-conference game in Bloomfield, N.J. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
