BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2016) - On Saturday, the LIU Post baseball team swept Queens College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader, 3-2 and 8-3, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.

In the opener, the Pioneers (16-19, 8-11 ECC) got on the board first, when sophomore left fielder James Cohan (Syosset, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second.

The Knights (16-21, 7-12) tied it at 1-all in their half of the fourth and took a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, junior catcher Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) evened the score at 2-2 with an RBI single.

Later, in the seventh, senior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) plated the go-ahead run with an RBI double.

Junior pitcher Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) kept the Knights off the board in the eighth and ninth innings to earn his team-leading fifth win.

Jagiello went the distance, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits. The righty struck out nine and walked four.

In the nightcap, the Knights got a run in the first inning off starter Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.), but the red-shirt senior settled in after that.

The offense responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, a run in the second and two more in the third, before plating a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Queens pushed across a pair in the top of the seventh, but Arena was able to close the door to earn his third win. The lefty allowed three earned runs on five hits, while striking out two.

Junior designated hitter Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) led the offense with two hits and two RBIs each.

Asbaty, Groeneveld, junior center fielder Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.), senior second baseman Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman left fielder Joe Piscitelli (Levittown, N.Y.) accounted for the other LIU Post runs.

The Pioneers look to complete the four-game sweep Sunday (Apr. 24), when they take on the Knights in Flushing. First pitch is set for noon.
