BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2016) - On Tuesday, the No. 5/8 LIU Post women's lacrosse team cruised to an 11-4 win against 20th-ranked Stonehill College in a non-conference duel at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Tied 1-1 just over three minutes into the opening half, the Pioneers (13-3) ended the session on an 8-0 run to bring a 9-1 advantage into the locker room. Junior attacker
Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder
Ryan McKinney (Downingtown, Pa.) scored two goals apiece in the stretch. Fellow junior attacker
Connor Bird (Syosset, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists.
In the second half, Bird tacked on two free-position tallies in a stint of 1:21 to increase LIU Post's lead to 10-1 at the 14:49 mark.
That proved to be all the Pioneers needed, as the Skyhawks (7-8) only came as close as 10-4 the rest of the way.
Bird finished with a game-high five points (3 G, 2 A) and six draw controls in the victory. She also caused two turnovers. Vagelatos registered two goals and two assists for four points. McKinney notched three goals and scooped up two draws.
Between the pipes, sophomore goalie
Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made two saves for LIU Post. Her counterpart, Kaitlin Hess (Guilderland, N.Y.), stopped three shots for Stonehill.
The Pioneers outshot their opposition by a 20-10 count in the contest, including limiting the Skyhawks to only six shots in the first 50 minutes. Additionally, LIU Post owned a 17-11 edge in ground balls and dominated 14-3 in draw controls.
