BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2016) - Senior attackman
Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) became the all-time goal leader in LIU Post men's lacrosse history Saturday in the Pioneers' 18-3 triumph against East Coast Conference foe University of the District of Columbia at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Beccaris' four-goal day increased his career total to 146, shattering
Tom Postel's mark of 144. He notched the record-breaking goal in the third quarter, finishing on a behind-the-back effort at the 11:04 mark.
Senior midfielder
Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.) led all scorers in the win, tallying three goals and three assists for six points. Senior attackman
Matt Bellando (Miami, Fla.) netted four goals and caused three turnovers.
Senior attackman/midfielder
Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder
Dylan Harned (Selden, N.Y.) collected four points apiece. Graduate midfielder
Jeremy Morgan (Ridge, N.Y.) recorded a pair of goals.
Tied 1-1 in the first quarter, LIU Post (10-3, 7-1 ECC). which won the ECC regular-season title, rolled off eight unanswered goals in the period to open up a 9-1 cushion at the end of 15 minutes of play. Berardis had three goals and two assists to pace the Pioneers in that stretch.
That proved to be all the green and gold needed, as the hosts eventually built as much as a 15-goal lead (18-3) on
Nick Zebouni's
(Ponte Vedra, Fla.) first collegiate tally in the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers doubled up the Firebirds in shots (51-24) in the game, while also holding a 40-22 advantage in ground balls. Additionally, LIU Post converted 14-of-17 (82.3 percent) clear attempts and won 16-of-24 (66.7 percent) faceoffs.
Junior midfielder
Anthony Galeotafiore (Wantagh, N.Y.) won 75.0 percent of his draws taken, earning 15 victories in 20 tries. He scooped up eight ground balls in the process.
In his collegiate debut, freshman goaltender
Bryan Ochs (Syosset, N.Y.) made seven saves on 10 shots. Senior goalies
Frank DeLuca (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
Adam Winne (Ridgefield, Conn.) each stopped one shot.
Head Coach
John Jez and the Pioneers have secured the No. 1 seed in next week's East Coast Conference Championship. They will host fourth-seeded Mercy College in a semifinal match-up Wednesday (May 4) at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium at 4 p.m.
