Softball Falls to Molloy in ECC Championship Final, 4-0
Box Score
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2016) - On Saturday, the No. 2 seed LIU Post softball team had its bid for an East Coast Conference title halted by third-seeded Molloy College in a 4-0 loss at the NYIT Softball Field in Old Westbury.
The Pioneers (36-13-1) mustered six hits in the loss, but never advanced a runner past second base. Sophomore outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) accounted for two of the hits and also drew a walk.
Molloy (33-11) capitalized on a two-out error in the first to open the scoring. After a muffed throw by freshman first baseman
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) kept the inning alive for the Lions, sophomore catcher Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to left-center to plate junior designated player Milan Botte (Reston, Va.) for the contest's first run.
Molloy would add another run in the fifth on a Kaitlyn Snyder (Smithtown, N.Y.) solo homer and two more in the seventh to extend its lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior outfielder
Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Melendez both provided singles to put the potential tying run in the on-deck circle for LIU Post. That hitter never came to bat though, as junior outfielder
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) grounded out to second to end it.
Junior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) took the loss in the decision, hurling a complete-game six-hitter with three walks and two strikeouts.
