BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2016) - Senior designated player
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) and freshman catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) had a combined five RBIs Tuesday to lead the LIU Post softball team to a sweep of Mercy College in East Coast Conference action at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
Game #1: LIU Post 6, Mercy 1
Though the Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Pioneers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back.
Senior third baseman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) took advantage of a bases-loaded situation, sacrificing home freshman shortstop
Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) from third. Swantek later contributed a go-ahead RBI infield single, making it a 2-1 game.
LIU Post then tacked on a four-spot in the second inning to break the game open. Swantek provided the big hit of the frame; a bases-clearing, two-out, two-RBI double to straight-away center.
In the circle, junior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) retired 15 of the last 16 batters she faced. Martin scattered just two hits, two walks and one run with six strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Game #2: LIU Post 2, Mercy 1
The Pioneers (20-6, 11-1 ECC) drew first blood in the nightcap, when Seader laced an opposite-field RBI double to left in the third, plating sophomore outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.). Marrone got the rally started in the frame, as she reached base with a two-out infield single.
Two innings later, Marrone bunted Mele and sophomore outfielder
Marisa San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) into scoring position with one out. Seader subsequently drove in a key insurance run with an RBI single through the right side, extending LIU Post's advantage to 2-0.
Freshman pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) ran into her only trouble of the afternoon in the top of the sixth. Despite walking in a run, Olshevski stranded the bases loaded, after inducing a line out from freshman first baseman Ashley Smith (East Meadow, N.Y.).
Olshevski threw a complete-game five-hitter, allowing only one run and one walk, while fanning seven. The win was her seventh in a row, improving her 2016 record to 11-2.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to the diamond Thursday (Apr. 7), when they face Dominican College in a non-conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Softball Complex at 3 p.m.
