DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 7, 2016) - The LIU Post baseball team came away with a pair of East Coast Conference wins Saturday, as it swept Mercy College, 7-1 and 3-0, at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry.
The Pioneers (21-20, 11-11 ECC) got strong pitching performances from juniors
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) and
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.), en route to their sixth- and seventh-straight victories in ECC play.
In the opener, LIU Post got on the board first in the third. Senior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) doubled home junior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) for the game's opening run.
Later, in the fifth, the Pioneers led off the frame with five straight hits that produced five runs. Then, with two outs, freshman third baseman
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) doubled in the inning's sixth run.
Mercy (13-27, 6-16) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but DeCarli was in command all game.
The righty went the distance for the second time in three starts. He scattered six hits and struck out five to earn his fourth win.
Sophomore right fielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.), Asbaty, Groeneveld and Mendyk all had two-hit games. Junior designated hitter
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runs.
In the nightcap, a
Lou Doria (Wantagh, N.Y.) RBI single in the top of the first gave the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead. That would be all Jagiello needed, but the offense gave him some insurance later in the game.
With two on and none out in the top of the third, junior center fielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) grounded into a double play that brought across a run.
In the fourth, sophomore left fielder
James Cohan (Syosset, N.Y.) scored sophomore shortstop
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) with a bunt, making it 3-0.
Jagiello tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout to earn his team-leading seventh win. His seven victories are also tied for the most in the ECC. The righty struck out four and walked one.
Cohan was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the second game. He and Doria accounted for the two RBIs in the contest.
The Pioneers and Mavericks wrap up their four-game set with a pair of nine-inning games at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville on Sunday (May 7). First pitch is set for noon. Prior to the doubleheader, Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and his staff will honor the team's graduating seniors.
