BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2016) - A last-second 34-yard field goal by sophomore kicker
Joey Tolgyesi (Miami, Fla.) sent the LIU Post football team to a thrilling 27-24 win against Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
In the game-winning drive, the Pioneers (4-0, 3-0 NE-10) started at their own 25-yard line. Senior quarterback
Jeff Kidd (Salem, Ore.) completed eight of his nine passes in the series to lead LIU Post into the red zone for Tolgyesi's fourth-quarter heroics.
Tied 7-7 in the third quarter, the hosts forced a three-and-out, setting up a Bentley (2-2, 2-1 NE-10) punt. Red-shirt senior outside linebacker
Justin Ortiz (Staten Island, N.Y.) then blocked the subsequent kick, which rolled beyond the end zone for a safety, giving LIU Post a slight 9-7 edge with nine minutes left.
The Pioneers eventually led 16-7 in the period, after Kidd connected with red-shirt senior wide receiver
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.) on a seven-yard touchdown pass at the 2:53 mark.
However, the Falcons scored 10 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game. Freshman kicker Grant Buchanan (Holliston, Mass.) split the uprights from 32 yards out to put Bentley ahead 17-16 in the fourth quarter.
LIU Post answered right back though. On the third snap of the ensuing drive, the tandem of Kidd and Hubbard struck again. This time, Hubbard beat the Falcons' secondary for a go-ahead 52-yard touchdown reception.
Hubbard finished the afternoon with 14 catches for 167 yards. Kidd was 36-of-51 passing for 377 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 80 yards, including a two-yard keeper that resulted in a two-point conversion to widen the gap to 24-17.
Red-shirt junior wideout
Kyle Ward (Elizabeth, N.J.) hauled in seven catches for 97 yards and a TD. Red-shirt sophomore
Malik Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.) ran for 58 yards and added six receptions for 46 yards.
Red-shirt senior defensive lineman
Kenny Scotland (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and senior defensive back
Jared Chester (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) made seven tackles apiece. Scotland contributed a sack, as well. Junior defensive back
Richard Wright (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had six solo tackles, one interception and two pass break-ups.
Head Coach
Bryan Collins and the Pioneers return to action next Saturday (Oct. 1), when they face NE-10 rival Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. at 1 p.m.
