WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 4, 2017) - Freshman forward
Mikaiya Moore (Amityville, N.Y.) had a season-high 30 points Wednesday to lift the LIU Post women's basketball team to a thrilling 84-83 overtime win against University of the District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference showdown at the UDC Sports Complex.
Moore shot an impressive 14-of-20 from the floor and grabbed six reboundsĀ in the process. She is the first Pioneer to tally 30 or more points in a game since Chelsea Williams scored 32 points versus NYIT on Mar. 4, 2015.
Leading 46-44 nearly midway through the third quarter, the Pioneers (7-7, 4-1 ECC) went on an 11-2 run in a span of 4:22 to open up an 11-point cushion (57-46) at the 1:19 mark.
Senior guard
Kylie Garrett (Mount Orab, Ohio), who recorded 17 points in 27 minutes off the bench, sparked the burst with a three-pointer. Moore capped it off with back-to-back lay-ups.
Late in the fourth quarter, LIU Post led by double figures (70-60), until a quick 8-0 spurt by UDC (2-13, 1-4 ECC) cut the deficit to 70-68 with 1:52 remaining.
Though the Pioneers subsequently made 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch, the Firebirds tied the game at the buzzer on a three-ball by Shantel Oliver (Columbia, Md.).
In the overtime session, UDC led for much of the period, but a lay-up by Moore with 1:45 left put LIU Post in front for good.
From there, the green and gold held the opposition without a point for the remainder of overtime. They also kept the Firebirds from attempting a game-winning shot in the final seconds.
For the contest, sophomore guard
Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) collected 14 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Senior guard
Kristen Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) totaled 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward
Sasha Patterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Red-shirt freshman guard
Robyn Francis (Rosedale, N.Y.) pulled down eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
Head Coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to action Saturday (Jan. 7), when they square off with Roberts Wesleyan College in an ECC clash at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
