ERIE, Pa. (Feb. 24, 2017) - On Friday, the LIU Post wrestling team grappled at Day One of the 2017 NCAA Division II Super Region I Championships, hosted by Mercyhurst University in Erie.
Freshman
Anthony Sparacio (North Babylon, N.Y.) advanced to the semifinals in the 133-lb. bracket. He won a 6-4 sudden-victory decision over West Liberty's Bryce Humphreys in his lone match of the day.
Meanwhile, senior
T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.), who was tabbed as the No. 1 regionally-ranked wrestler at the 149-lb. weight class, opened things up with a 6-2 win against West Liberty's Josh Cornell.
He then lost in the quarterfinals to Gannon's George McGuire, before rebounding in the wrestlebacks with a pin of Kutztown's Ryne Morrison in 6:14. It was Fabian's team-leading seventh fall of the year.
Red-shirt junior
Jackson Mordente (Farmingville, N.Y.) kicked off the 157-lb. competition with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Jason West of Alderson-Broaddus.
Tied 6-6 in the third period, Mordente recorded a match-winning takedown in the final minute of regulation to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Junior
Ed Ramirez, Jr. (Massapequa, N.Y.) and senior
Jesse Meaney (Toms River, N.J.) each dropped a close three-point bout in the 165- and 174-lb. wrestlebacks, respectively.
