Box Score
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2017) - The No. 16/15 LIU Post men's lacrosse team fell short Saturday in a 9-6 loss to No. 12/12 Adelphi University in a non-conference tilt at Motamed Field in Garden City.
Down 2-1 after one period of play, the Panthers (2-1) scored four unanswered goals in a near four-minute stretch to jump out to a 5-2 advantage at the 11:05 mark of the second quarter.
However, the Pioneers (2-3) cut into the deficit and trailed 6-4 at the break. Sophomore attackman/midfielder
Frank Ranfone (Guilford, Conn.) netted a man-up tally with 1:52 left to make it a two-goal game.
In the latter half, Adelphi built its largest lead (9-4) of the contest and kept the green and gold off the scoreboard until midway through the fourth quarter.
Freshman midfielder
Austin Guerrina (Longwood, Fla.) and junior midfielder
Dylan Harned (Selden, N.Y.) each found the back of the cage in the final minutes, but the comeback was too large to overcome for LIU Post.
Guerrina (2 G) and Harned (1 G, 1 A) had two points and a game-high nine shots apiece in the loss. Junior attackman
Chris Trasacco (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman midfielder
Dan Foley (Carmel, N.Y.) added goals, as well.
Between the pipes, senior goalieĀ
Matthew Liantonio (Miller Place, N.Y.) made seven saves for the Pioneers. Sophomore cageminder Brendan McDougal (Lynbrook, N.Y.) stopped 13 shots for the Panthers, eight of which came in the second half.
The green and gold were a near-perfect 15-of-16 (93.7 percent) on clearing attempts in the game. They also converted on 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) extra-man opportunities.
Head Coach
John Jez and his LIU Post squad now return home to open their 2016-17 East Coast Conference slate against No. 17 Molloy College at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville. The opening faceoff is set for 11 a.m.
