YAPHANK, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2017) - On Friday, the LIU Post baseball team opened up its 2017 East Coast Conference slate with a pair of losses to Mercy College at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank.
The Pioneers (7-7, 0-2 ECC) dropped two hard-fought contests in the doubleheader, falling by 2-1 and 6-4 scores.
Game #1: LIU Post 1, Mercy 2
Tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth, the Mavericks took the lead for good on a two-out RBI single up the middle by junior outfielder Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn.).
The Pioneers had an opportunity to tie the score in their final turn at-bat, after junior pinch-runner
Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) reached third with none out in the inning.
Senior infielder
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit a subsequent lineout though, which doubled off Hahn at third base to end the threat.
Earlier in the contest, freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) leveled the score at 1-1 with a first-inning RBI double to left-center.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was tagged with her first loss of 2017. She allowed six hits and two runs and fanned five in 5.2 innings of work.
Game #2: LIU Post 4, Mercy 6
Down 2-0 in the nightcap, the Pioneers plated four unanswered runs to rally to a 4-2 lead through four innings of play.
Sophomore shortstop
Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) hit a game-tying RBI double in the third, while freshman infielder
Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) provided a go-ahead two-run single in the fourth.
However, the Mavericks (4-0, 2-0 ECC) got a run back in the fifth and drove in three more in the seventh to battle back for the victory.
The green and gold did get the tying run to the plate in their half of the seventh, but a Fortin groundout and
Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.) lineout halted the potential comeback attempt.
Senior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.), who threw 4.0 innings of relief, took the loss in the decision. She scattered seven hits, four runs and two walks and struck out five in her outing.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to action Sunday (Mar. 26), when they host Wilmington University at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
