BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2017) - The LIU Post softball team dropped two non-conference games to Wilmington University on Sunday at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.
The Pioneers, who slipped to 7-9 overall, lost by respective scores of 5-3 and 9-5 in the doubleheader.
Game #1: LIU Post 3, Wilmington 5
Down 5-0 midway through the opening game, the Pioneers got on the board in the fourth, on a lead-off solo homer by sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.).
Then, in the sixth, Seader struck again. With a runner on, she took a 2-2 offering from sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) out to center to trim the deficit to 5-3.
In the seventh, sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate.
The green and gold were unable to tie the score though, as Whiteside earned the complete-game victory for Wilmington.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was tagged with the loss for LIU Post. She let up five hits and two unearned runs and fanned a pair in three innings of work.
Game #2: LIU Post 5, Wilmington 9
In the nightcap, the Pioneers turned the tables on the Wildcats (13-10) and jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Melendez, Seader and junior first baseman
Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.) each had a one-out RBI single in the frame.
However, Wilmington fought back and plated seven unanswered runs to grab a 7-3 lead.
In the fifth, Melendez drove a two-RBI single to left to close the gap to 7-5, but that was as close as LIU Post came to fulfilling a comeback.
Senior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) made the start in the circle for the Pioneers. She threw 3.2 innings of seven-hit, four-run, one-walk, two-strikeout ball in the loss.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad are back in action Tuesday (Mar. 28), when they host East Coast Conference foe University of Bridgeport at 2 p.m. at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.
