CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 5, 2017) - On Sunday, the LIU Post softball team opened up the 2017 campaign with a 7-0 blanking of Bentley University and a 6-1 win against Holy Family University at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont.
Game #1: LIU Post 7, Bentley 0
In the opener, the Pioneers capitalized on a pair of early miscues to jump out to a commanding 5-0 lead over the Falcons (0-2).
Following back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the second, freshman third baseman
Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) reached on an error to plate freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) for the game's opening run.
Then, in the third, sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) made her way on base safely, via a lead-off infield error.
From there, the green and gold pushed across four runs to widen the gap to 5-0. Junior outfielder
Claire Travis (East Meadow, N.Y.) stroked a two-out RBI single in the frame. Sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk, while Sneeden added an RBI groundout.
The Pioneers never looked back from there. Sophomore and reigning East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) threw a complete game in the effort. She yielded six hits and fanned two, without allowing a walk in her seven innings of work.
Game #2: LIU Post 6, Holy Family 1
In the nightcap, the Pioneers (2-0) earned consecutive two-out walks in the opening frame, before a two-RBI single from Sneeden staked the green and gold to an early 2-0 cushion.
Later in the contest, LIU Post still owned a two-run edge (3-1), until a three-run fifth extended the Pioneers' advantage to 6-1. Fortin provided a two-RBI double to center in the inning, after back-to-back hits by Seader and junior outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.).
One batter later, Melendez ripped an RBI single down the left-field line, which scored Fortin for the final run of the game.
Seader, who batted 3-for-3 with three runs scored against the Tigers (0-2), contributed a lead-off solo home run in the top of the third.
In the circle, senior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) tossed seven innings of five-hit, one-run, one-walk, nine-strikeout ball for LIU Post.
