CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2017) - The LIU Post softball team earned a 10-1 five-inning victory against the College of Saint Rose and won a 6-2 extra-inning decision over Saint Anselm College Wednesday at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont.
Game #1: LIU Post 10, Saint Rose 1 - F/5
In the opener, the Pioneer bats exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits, including a six-run third inning, to cruise to the win.
Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the green and gold strung together three straight hits to produce a pair of runs. Freshman infielder
Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) had an RBI triple in the frame, while junior infielder
Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drilled an RBI single to right.
Then, in the third, LIU Post pulled away with a six-run outburst to extend its lead to 9-0.
Five different players drove in a run for the Pioneers in the inning, led by a two-RBI single from sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.). Sneeden, Gatto and senior infielder
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) each contributed an RBI single.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was strong in the circle, tossing five innings of one-hit, one-run, two-strikeout ball. She has also not allowed a walk in her first two starts of 2017.
Game #2: LIU Post 6, Saint Anselm 2 - F/8
Tied 2-2 in extra innings, the Pioneers (4-2) put together a four-run eighth to grab a 6-2 advantage and never looked back.
Sophomore infielder
Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) beat out an infield single in the frame, which plated senior pinch-runner
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) for the eventual game-winning run.
Two batters later, sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) gave the green and gold some insurance with a two-RBI double to center.
Earlier in the contest, LIU Post scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Mele put the Pioneers on the board with a fourth-inning RBI single. Freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) followed with a lead-off solo home run in the fifth.
Senior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) claimed the win for the Pioneers, throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout. Freshman pitcher
