BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2017) - On Monday, the LIU Post softball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a sweep of East Coast Conference nemesis St. Thomas Aquinas College at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
The Pioneers, who improved to 21-15 overall and 7-5 in ECC play, cruised to a 4-1 win in the opener and an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.
Game #1: LIU Post 4, St. Thomas Aquinas 1
In the opener, the Pioneers jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage, after a two-out, two-RBI first-inning double by junior first baseman
Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.).
The green and gold then doubled their lead in the fifth. Freshman third baseman
Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.), who later scored on a fielding error, hit an RBI single to left-center to plate freshman pinch-runner
Ashley Casazza (Wantagh, N.Y.).
The Spartans eventually got on the board in the seventh, but freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) threw out a runner at home to end the game.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) hurled a complete-game five-hitter in the win, scattering one run and two walks with three strikeouts.
Game #2: LIU Post 8, St. Thomas Aquinas 0
In the nightcap, the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 4-0 lead.
After three consecutive singles to open the frame, Fortin lined a two-RBI double to left-center to break the scoreless tie. Gatto added an RBI single up the middle, while sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) had an RBI groundout.
In the fourth, Melendez ripped a two-RBI double into the right-center field gap to increase the hosts' advantage to 8-0. One batter earlier, Fortin drove an RBI single through the left side.
Freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) threw five innings of four-hit, one-walk, five-strikeout ball. She retired the side in order in three of the five frames.

Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad return to action Tuesday (Apr. 18), when they take on New York Institute of Technology in an ECC doubleheader at 3 p.m. at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.
