Box Score
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 4, 2017) - The LIU Post softball team dropped a tough 5-2 decision to top-seeded Mercy College in the first round of the 2017 East Coast Conference Championship Thursday at Smith Field in Dobbs Ferry.
The loss moves the Pioneers (24-25) into the loser's bracket, where they will face second-seeded Molloy College on Friday (May 5) at 12:30 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry.
The green and gold capitalized on a pair of early mistakes by the Mavericks (30-13) to jump out to a quick 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the first, a two-out wild pitch allowed sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) to score from third for the game's opening run.
Then, in the second, junior outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) reached on a lead-off error and subsequently circled the bases to widen the gap to 2-0.
However, Mercy battled back and plated at least a run in each of the next three innings to grab an eventual 5-2 lead.
The Pioneers had an opportunity to rally in the sixth, but a
Claire Travis (East Meadow, N.Y.) lineout and
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) groundout stranded a pair of runners in scoring position.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was tagged with the loss in the decision. She let up 13 hits and five runs and fanned two in six innings of work.
