UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 7, 2017) - Sophomore pitcher
James Varela (Levittown, N.Y.) tossed a complete-game shutout Sunday to lift the LIU Post baseball team to a 5-0 victory over East Coast Conference rival Molloy College in its 2017 regular-season finale at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
Varela, who tossed his first collegiate complete game, allowed eight hits and three walks and fanned four, en route to picking up his third win of the season.
The Pioneers (27-18, 17-8 ECC) opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, on an RBI single by freshman first baseman
Zach Fritz (East Meadow, N.Y.).
One batter later, sophomore outfielder
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.) hit into a fielder's choice that scored fellow sophomore
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.), making it a 2-0 game.
Then, in the seventh, the green and gold tacked on three more runs to increase their lead to 5-0.
Senior outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the frame, while junior outfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) delivered a two-RBI single.
Andreoli finished 2-for-5 with a run scored in the contest. Fritz also contributed a pair of hits and recorded a game-high eight putouts. Senior designated hitter
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore second baseman
Sal Geraci (Bayport, N.Y.) both added 1-for-3 trips to the plate.
