GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - In a rematch of last season NCAA Division II East Region Final, the seventh-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team played No. 5 Adelphi to a 3-3 draw in double overtime.
The Pioneers used a successful penalty kick by
Morten Wenaas in the 85th minute to even the score after a pair of second-half goals gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Both sides registered 19 shots. Adelphi sent 13 of those shots on target, while the Pioneers found the net 10 times. LIU Post held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Oliver Hessner Hansen made a game-high 10 saves in 110 minutes between the pipes.
The Panthers wasted little time testing Hansen, as James Thristino gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the 6th minute. The defender sent a long kick towards the LIU Post goal, but Hansen misplayed the bounce and the ball found the mesh.
The Pioneers would control most of the action for the better part of the opening half, out shooting Adelphi, 5-4, over the first 45 minutes of play.
Trailing 1-0, LIU Post went on the offensive early in the second half. After
Charlie Ledula sent a shot on goal that was turned aside for a corner,
Harry Pearse sent a ball into the box that found the head of
Lukas Ostermann, who buried the header for the goal in the 49th minute.
The following minute, the Pioneers won another corner. Pearse once again sent a ball into the box that found the head of Ostermann, but his strike banged off the Post. Ledula was there to finish the rebound with a header of his own, giving LIU Post a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute.
In the 66th minute, the Panthers evened the score. Andre De Giorgio's header off a free kick by Joseph Sanchez, tying the game at 2-all.
Later, in the 78th minute, the Pioneers were called for a foul in the box. John Stojcevski converted the penalty kick, giving the Panthers a 3-2 edge.
Then, in the 85th minute, Adelphi was called for a foul in the box, giving the Pioneers a chance to tie it. Wenaas found the back of the net, leveling the score at 3.
In the 89th minute, Pearse sent a shot that sailed wide, and the teams were headed to overtime.
After the Panthers couldn't convert a corner kick in the 92nd minute, the Pioneers won back-to-back corners. On the second attempt,
Tom Stenberg's shot was blocked. In the 100th minute, Hansen stopped an Adelphi shot, forcing a second extra session.
With time winding down in the second overtime, Ostermann sent a header toward goal, but it missed high, just seconds before the final horn sounded.
The Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 2 when they take on American International at 3 p.m. in Garden City.
