KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The LIU Post wrestling team split two matches on day one of the Kutztown University duals Friday, taking down Minot State before coming up just short to Shippensburg University Jan. 26.
Round One – LIU Post 22, Minot State 18
In the day's opening match, the Pioneers took down Minot State by a four-point margin, 22-18. After dropping the first two bouts by decision at 125 and 133, senior
Joe Calderone pinned
Jeseb Mogen two minutes into the match to level the scoring, 6-6. Junior
Peter DeTore put the Green and Gold ahead at 149 with a 14-7 decision to earn three points. The Beavers leveled the scoring, 9-9, with a slight 3-2 decision at 157, but the Pioneers quickly responded when senior
Jackson Mordente dominated
Carlos Toledano, 16-0, earning five points by technical fall at 165 to put LIU Post ahead for good.
Junior
Dan Arkow earned three points at 174 with a 10-3 decision against
Tyler Sharron, putting LIU Post ahead 17-9 with three bouts remaining. The Beavers stayed alive with a decision victory at 184, but sophomore
Bobby Pease secured the victory for the Green and Gold with a dominating performance of his own, taking down
Bryce Broome, 16-1 for a five-point technical fall.

Round Two – Shippensburg 25, LIU Post 20
Another close matchup ensued in round two, when the Pioneers were upended on the matches' final two bouts, falling 25-20. The Raiders set the tone in the opening bout, earning six points with a pin five minutes in during the 125 matchup. The Pioneers leveled the scoring immediately however when freshman
Bryan Romero earned six points by forfeit to make it 6-6 after two bouts.
Calderone put together another dominating performance in his second matchup of the day at 141, taking down
Jared Leonetti, 16-0 to win by technical fall and put the Pioneers up 11-6. Again the match was leveled immediately however, as Shippensburg erased the five-point deficit with a technical fall of their own at 149. The Raiders used the momentum to take a four-point lead after a major decision victory at 157. Three straight victories for the Pioneers kept the teeter-totter match going, when Mordente, Arkow, and sophomore
Dan McClure earned decision victories to put LIU Post ahead, 20-15.
It was the last points of the day for the Pioneers however, as the Raiders earned a major decision victory at 197 and a pin at 285 to come from behind and steal the match, 25-20.
