DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The LIU Post women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw at No. 7 Mercy College, earning one point in the East Coast Conference standings on Saturday, Oct. 13.
It was an even matchup throughout, with the Mavericks holding a slight edge in shot attempts, 18-13 and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Hillevi Eklow made a season-high eight saves to preserve the shutout. Junior
Julia Duffy led the Pioneers with five shot attempts, three of which found the frame. Junior
Paige Sherlock added two shots on goal but the Pioneer offense could not push any shots past Mercy goalkeeper Melissa Torres who stopped six shots for the shutout.
Mercy put the pressure on LIU Post during the first half, outshooting the Pioneers 8-2. Eklow needed three saves during a 12-minute stretch in the opening stanza to fend off an early Maverick attack and made another save late in the half on a shot by Kendall Wright. Duffy fired a shot on target with 10 seconds remaining but both sides entered halftime scoreless.
The Pioneer offense had a flurry of shots early in the second half, firing three shots during a five-minute span though just one shot found the target. The Mavericks countered with three shots of their own during a three-minute burst moments later before the Pioneers tallied two shots on goal at the midway point of the half.
LIU Post outshot Mercy during the first extra period, 2-1 with Torres making one save. During the second period, both teams notched just one shot apiece but neither attempt found the target and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
The Green and Gold return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 17 when they host Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 3:00 p.m. at the Pioneer Soccer Park.
