BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Angela Deren scored four times and added three assists to help lead the LIU Post women's lacrosse team past Bentley University 15-5 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium Feb. 28.
The Pioneers controlled the contest from the opening draw, taking the lead six minutes into the match when freshman
Jamie Alvino deposited a pass from Deren to go ahead 1-0. The Pioneers rattled off six unanswered tallies to open the game, including two goals by Deren and two by sophomore
Paige Sherlock before Bentley responded with its only goal of the first half at the 12:57 mark. LIU Post tacked on two more goals before the intermission and carried an 8-1 lead into halftime.
The second half started much like the first, as the Green and Gold scored the first four goals of the period behind Deren's final two strikes of the afternoon. The Falcons answered with a 3-0 run of goals, but it was not enough as the Pioneers pulled away with three goals during the final 6:38 to earn the 15-5 victory.
LIU Post led in nearly every statistical category, outshooting Bentley 35-21, holding a 13-8 advantage in draw controls and an 18-14 edge in ground balls. Defensively, senior
Olivia Kirk stopped seven shots to earn the victory, while Sherlock scooped up five ground balls to lead the Pioneers.
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend when they open East Coast Conference play in Rochester against Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, March 3 at 12:00 p.m.
