BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU Post softball team compiled 25 hits and remained perfect in East Coast Conference play with a sweep of Molloy College at the LIU Post Softball Complex April 10.
Sophomore
Abbey Fortin led the offensive barrage with a 6-for-7 performance at the plate, knocking a double and a triple to go with two runs batted in. Classmate
Allie Laird finished 4-for-5 and junior
Leah Mele added three hits with two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore
Megan Sneeden blasted her first home run of the season in game one and freshman
Breanna Klaiber added a home run to cap off game one.
As a team, the Pioneers hit .481 on the day while the LIU Post pitching staff held Molloy to just .182 hitting.
In the circle sophomore
Katie Humhej tossed a three-hit shutout in game two, striking out five batters. Junior
Hannah Olshevski earned the win in game one, allowing five hits over five innings with three strikeouts.
Game One – LIU Post 11, Molloy 2 (5 Inn.)
Mele gave the Pioneers a lead in the bottom of the first inning with a single to left field, but the Green and Gold took control late as the offense came to life in the second half of the contest. The Lions drew even with a home run to right-center field in the top of the third, though the score did not remain tied for long.
Sneeden answered the homer with a three-run shot of her own in the bottom of the frame. Later in the inning junior
Julia Seader drove a line drive through the left side of the infield to bring home two more runs to cap off a five-run inning for the Pioneers. The LIU Post offense was not done, scoring five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the eight-run mercy rule. Fortin drove home two runs to open the inning on a single to center field and Klaiber followed up in the next at-bat with a three-run home run to right-center field to give the Pioneers an 11-2 victory in the opener.
Game Two – LIU Post 4, Molloy 0
It was a pitcher's duel early in game two, as neither pitcher surrendered a run until the fifth inning. The Pioneers threatened early but could not deliver the timely hit when needed, stranding eight runners on base through the first four innings.
The Pioneers finally broke through in the fifth inning, scoring a run on an RBI-single by Mele after Fortin led off the inning with a double to the wall in right-center field. Mele later came around to score on a single by Laird. Sophomore
Ashley Casazza drove home the final run of the frame with an infield single as the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning.
LIU Post added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Klaiber drove home Fortin with a single to right-center field and Humhej stranded two runners on base in the top of the seventh to hang on for the 4-0 win.
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday, April 12 when they continue ECC play at St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:00 p.m.
