Game One – LIU Post 5, Queens 0
A five-run third inning proved to be the difference in the opener, as senior
Gianna Gatto led-off the top of the frame with a solo home run to left field to give LIU Post a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore
Ashley Casazza added a bunt single in the following at-bat before junior
Julia Seader ripped a single to left field to put runners on the corners.
A Dun walk loaded the bases and Fortin drove in the game's second run with a single through the left side of the infield before the Pioneers tacked on three more runs during the next three at-bats to make it 5-0.
Olshevski took care of the rest, stranding 11 total runners on base in game one to keep the shutout intact and helping the Pioneers to a game one victory.
Game Two – LIU Post 3, Queens 1 (5 Inn.)
In a game shortened due to darkness, the Pioneers needed to rally in the final inning of action to earn the victory. Queens took its first lead of the day in the third inning on consecutive two-out hits, including a double down the left field line to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage midway through the contest.
The Green and Gold rallied in the top of the fifth, however, scoring all three runs in the frame to take home the sweep. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Fortin tied the score with a homer to left-center field on a 2-0 count. Klaiber followed with a single to set the stage for an RBI-triple by Mele to give LIU Post a 2-1 lead. Sneeden capped off the rally with a two-out double after a seven pitch at-bat.
Despite striking out just three batters in the contest, Humhej stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the frame with consecutive strikeouts to end the contest.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow, April 18, when they travel to the University of Bridgeport for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
