BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman
Breanna Klaiber went 5-for-7 at the plate to lead the LIU Post softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Southern Connecticut State University April 26 in non-conference action at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
Klaiber added two doubles and two runs batted in to her stat line for the day. Sophomore
Abbey Fortin also had a big day with four hits and three runs scored, while junior
Julia Seader and sophomore
Allie Laird contributed three hits apiece.
In the circle, sophomore
Katie Humhej tossed a three-hit shutout in game two, striking out 10 batters to move within two strikeouts of 200 for her career. Junior
Hannah Olshevski earned her 15th victory of the season in game one, allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Game One – LIU Post 6, Southern Conn. State 5
The Pioneers needed a come-from-behind effort to take the opener, but did so in walk-off fashion in their final at-bat when senior
Gianna Gatto drove in classmate
Claire Travis with a slow ground ball to first base. Southern Connecticut State took the lead twice against LIU Post during the game, jumping out to an early lead in the second inning with a solo home run by
Delany Turner and an RBI-single by
Jayden Delaporta.
The lead did not faze the Pioneers though, as Fortin singled home freshman
Patricia Dun in the bottom of the third to put LIU Post on the board and Seader and Dun ripped back-to-back RBI-doubles off the center field wall in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Southern Connecticut State erased the deficit in its next at-bat, however, plating three runs on four hits, but Olshevski stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage. The Green and Gold also stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame before breaking through with a two-out RBI-double by Klaiber to tie the score, 6-6. Olshevski stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh, setting the table for the game-winning run in the final inning to give the Pioneers a 6-5 victory.
Game Two – LIU Post 5, Southern Conn. State 0
Dun and junior
Leah Mele provided all the offense that Humjej needed in the first inning to put LIU Post ahead for good with a groundout following a lead-off triple by Seader and an RBI-single to right-center field. Following three scoreless innings, The Pioneers tacked on three runs in the fifth on an RBI-double by Klaiber and an Owl fielding error.
Humhej allowed just three runners in scoring position during the game, with no runner reaching third base. The sophomore retired the final 10 batters in order, including striking out the side in the seventh inning to close out the contest.
The Pioneers close out the regular season on Sunday, April 29 on Senior Day when they play host to the New York Institute of Technology at 12:00 p.m.
