HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In a match that went down to the wire, the No. 19 LIU Post women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback against the University of Bridgeport in its first East Coast Conference (ECC) match of 2018 Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Despite the loss the Pioneers out-shot the Purple Knights; they had 11 shots and eight shots on goal to nine and six by Bridgeport.

LIU Post had several scoring opportunities in the first half including nine shots and six shots on goal but could not find the back of the net. In the seventh minute freshman Kendra Oldroyd came close to giving the Pioneers an early lead, as did redshirt junior Alice Schonfeldt in the ninth but both shots were saved by the Purple Knight. It was a similar story for the remainder of the half as LIU Post had multiple shots on goal but could not find the back of the net.

The Pioneers looked dangerous early in the second half as a header by Gabrielle Clark almost got the Pioneers on the scoreboard just 27 seconds into the period.

In the 49th minute LIU Post became the first team to score in the match; a corner kick by junior Paige Sherlock found sophomore Samantha Gordon and she made a clean connection as she volleyed a rocket under the crossbar to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Bridgeport would soon respond as in the 60th minute as the Purple Knights evened the score, guaranteeing the match would go down to the wire.

In the 78th minute Bridgeport scored again and gave themselves a 2-1 advantage heading into the closing moments of the game in which the Pioneers could not recover the deficit.
