PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite senior
Anthony Vaglica's first home run of the season, the LIU Post baseball team fell 2-1 to Pace University in a game that went to a tenth inning Friday afternoon at Peter X. Finnerty Field.
In the Pioneers' first extra-inning game of the season, senior
Anthony Vaglica was a standout after finishing with a home run and one RBI. Seniors
Dave Brehm,
Reynaldo Guillen and
Jimmy Mendyk also had hits for LIU Post.
On the mound, senior
James Varela struck out seven in 5.2 innings while junior
Noah Lorenzo also pitched 3.2 innings. Varela's 18 strikeouts are tied for the most in the East Coast Conference this season.
Varela struck out two batters in the bottom of the first then fanned three in the bottom of the second. Pace took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third but the Pioneers quickly fought back. In the top of the fourth, Brehm singled to left field and then advanced to second on a balk, but it was in the top of the fifth LIU Post would tie the game 1-1 after Vaglica homered down the left field line.
Guillen singled up the middle in the top of the sixth, then in the top of the ninth Brehm advanced after being hit by a pitch and stole second. Manzione followed by drawing a walk but neither the Pioneers or the Setters could add another run by the end of the ninth inning.
In the top of the tenth Mendyk singled to third base but it was the Setters who ultimately prevailed in the bottom of the tenth to take the win, 2-1.
