DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Coming off a doubleheader sweep yesterday, the LIU Post baseball team split its doubleheader with Mercy College Sunday at Mercy Field. The Pioneers, who now have an 11-1 record in East Coast Conference (ECC) play suffered a 14-3 setback in game one but bounced back to win game two, 7-0.

Senior Michael Manzione led from the front for LIU Post, tallying four hits, one RBI, one run and a double on the day. Senior Anthony Vaglica finished with three hits, three RBI and a home run while senior Dave Brehm recorded three hits, one RBI and three stolen bases.

Loeschorn was outstanding on the mound in game two, earning his fifth win of the season as he shut out the Mavericks and only allowed two hits.

Game One – Mercy 14, LIU Post 3

An RBI double down the left field line by Manzione gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first but Mercy responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

An RBI double to left center by Vaglica in the top of the third cut the Mavericks lead to 4-2 but Mercy added another run in the top of the third and led 5-2.

From that point the game was all Mercy as the Mavericks would score another seven runs. Vaglica homered to left center in the top of the ninth and the game ended with a final score of 14-3.

Game Two – LIU Post, Mercy

The contest was played to a stalemate early until the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI single to right field by Franchi in the top of the fourth. LIU Post added to its lead as a fielding error at shortstop led to senior Joe Piscitelli scoring to give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage.

Loeschorn helped prevent a late Maverick rally, striking out two batters in both the bottom of the seventh and bottom of the eighth.

The Pioneers' offense erupted in the top of the ninth; junior Zach Fritz scored after senior Jimmy Mendyk flew out to left field and sophomore Chris Wasson followed with a bunt to third base that scored Piscitelli. An RBI single to right center by Brehm and and an RBI single to left field by Vaglica saw LIU Post prevail with a final score of 7-0.
